Birth is a powerful experience. Pregnancy is a journey.
As the birthing mother, where do you want this
adventure to take you? You and your partner may
choose to use this wonderful, yet sometimes exhausting
event, to grow and bond as a couple. If you are alone on
this road to parenthood, you may be scared and in need
of reassurance, or you may be strong, independent, and
ready to take on the role with confidence. As lives and
situations vary greatly, reasons for considering a doula
vary greatly also. You may be looking for guidance in
how to achieve the best birth possible for you, or simply
looking for someone to be by your side to keep you company and comfort you.  My thoughts on birth are not
complicated. As there are many diverse personalities and circumstances, there are just as many "right" options in
how to labor and birth.

Possibly a more important question might be ..."What is your philosophy on birth?"

If you do not already know, as your doula, I can help you discover the answer to this question. If you wish, I can
help you uncover your fears and your expectations of birth. Then, you will be able to ascertain for yourself what
your desires are and make the choices that are right for you. The birth of your baby is distinctive and exclusively
yours; it is my responsibility to cherish that fact, and help you have the birthing experience that you desire.

Your journey through labor may be as smooth and serene as a calm lake, or it may be like the mighty rapids
carrying you by its power. One cannot predict its path, but you can prepare for it.  Whether you are one who
likes to leave the decision making to others, or you are one who likes to be in control, this birth experience is
yours and the choices are yours too. Simply put, if you desire to ask for help, or lean on the shoulders of
someone with more experience, then I feel those providing the assistance, (doctors, midwives, doulas, etc.)
should be willing to offer compassionate, knowledgeable support, while respecting your wishes.

My basic beliefs and desires for every birthing woman

I believe you, as a woman, were designed to give birth and that you embody
the strength and capacity to achieve your birthing goals.

You have the right to decide who will provide your prenatal and birthing care.
(midwife, family doctor, obstetrician, etc.)

You are entitled to birth where you want to, at home, at a birthing center,
at a hospital, wherever you feel most comfortable.

You should be free to share this life changing event with whomever you desire.
As your doula, I am there to provide my services and support to the family unit.

You have the freedom to choose whether you want to use pain medications and/or other medical interventions.

I believe that every woman who wants a doula should have a doula. Cost should not be a prohibitive factor;
therefore, Mother's Advocate Doula Services works on a sliding fee scale, based upon
the combined income of the mother and her partner (if applicable).

See my services page for prices and applicable lower income adjusted fees.
